Numeracy Learning at St Anthony’s

Numeracy Learning at St Anthony’s

At St Anthony’s we believe that Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement, Geometry and Statistics and Probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built.

At St Anthony’s, Mathematics aims to instil in students an appreciation of the elegance and power of mathematical reasoning. Mathematical ideas have evolved across all cultures over thousands of years and are constantly developing. Digital technologies are facilitating this expansion of ideas and providing access to new tools for continuing mathematical exploration and invention.

Educators at St Anthony’s focus on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. A variety of learning contexts including the use of hands on materials, open-ended tasks, rich learning activities and mental arithmetic strategies are used to promote the joy of mathematics and the learning of mathematics in practical ways. Educators allow time for learners to practice skills and time for learners to interact and explain their learning through sharing and reflecting.
